Some puzzles require you to dodge traps others require you to build bridges across chasms. In some puzzles, you need to scorch crates so they’ll break apart when you walk on them, which gives you access to a particular location without blocking the exit. And some of these concepts will make you go, “Wait, you can do that?” Puzzles continue to feel fresh, even late in the game, because the game keeps introducing new concepts. It seems like this could have just gone with a dedicated sit button as circle, with the square button for reverse.īut here’s the good news: As far as the puzzles go, Bonfire Peaks is an impressively designed game. I’m not sure why both of these actions are mapped to the same button when square and circle both do the same thing (it’s the reverse button - more on that later). ![]() This means that sometimes you go to pick up a crate and then your character sits instead. If there’s not a crate nearby, this button makes you sit instead. Now, this next part is just a nitpick, but you’ll use the X button to pick up crates. It feels vaguely like the tank controls of a PSOne-era Resident Evil game, only with a D-pad that’s constantly rotating. I can kind of see how this maybe would make sense in theory, but in practice, it results in directional controls that are frustratingly situational - your character controls differently based on whether he’s holding a crate and which direction he’s facing. ![]() If he’s facing to the left, pressing right will make him move backward and pressing up or down will make him spin. If you press left or right, he will spin in that direction. If the character is facing south and you press up, the character will walk backward. Now, the controller layout basically shifts based on which direction the character is facing. Things start to get wonky when the character picks up a crate. If you press to the right, the character will move to the right. ![]() If you press up, your character will walk north. I played this on PS5, so I’ll be talking about the PS5 controller layout here. (Related: “ The Guinea Worm-A Fond Obituary.”) Leucochloridium paradoxum It’s a nightmare of pain on its way out, but the good news is the worm is really on its way out: International efforts are moving the guinea worm ever closer to extinction. Though it doesn’t make us drown ourselves, it does make us seek water to relieve the burning sensation caused when the parasites try to exit out of our feet. The guinea worm has a similar strategy, but it infects people rather than grasshoppers. The worms, now up to four times as long as their host, go out and mate, leaving the grasshopper to drown. The French researchers concluded that the hairworms release a protein that acts on the insect’s central nervous system, causing it to go to the water, which is where hairworms reproduce. Hairworm larvae, possibly ingested by grasshoppers in the water they drink, grow to occupy the grasshopper’s body-the entire thing, except the head and legs. One thing I really feel strongly about, in terms of changes, is there needs to be clearer signage about which consoles are located where. We did eventually figure out that the upper right listings on the screen were more helpful, and we figured out the screen repair angle just about instantly on the final puzzle so great success on those bits. The rate of new errors is dependent on how many human players are present, but we can also look into tweaking this value, since it may scale too quickly. We can look into slowing this down however. ![]() We can certainly look into making this both clearer and easier, especially in regards to the size of the font.Īs for the containment screen, the pertinent information is displayed in the top right of the screen and that shouldn’t scroll, the rest of the screen is mostly flavor text and repeating what’s in that corner. Which is probably what Wenchbane was noticing, I believe that the 50% progress were the bots fulfilling their side of the task. Half of the calibration’s progress is also tied to making sure the screens are working properly. Every handful of screens that are fixed actually help the captain by removing incorrect numbers from the pool, which can help the captain find the correct pair faster. ![]() ![]() This probably needs to be clearer, but fixing screens on that central station can help the captain complete their objective. It's worth mentioning that the neural link calibration shouldn't increase passively, what’s likely happening is that the bots are helping by fixing the screens.
